Gollum and the Ring — The Birth of Obsession
Original Storyboard Sequence
From The Lord of the Rings (1978), directed by Ralph Bakshi

This original storyboard sequence depicts the haunting origins of Gollum’s bond with the One Ring, deep within the shadowed caverns of the Misty Mountains. Through moody washes of color and expressive, distorted linework, the panels follow the creature’s discovery of the Ring—its glow cutting through darkness as fascination turns to possession.

The sequence moves between isolation and fixation, capturing the moment the Ring claims its bearer as much as it is found. With its immersive use of color and atmosphere, this storyboard conveys not only a narrative event, but the psychological transformation that defines Gollum’s existence—marking the beginning of a lifelong obsession that echoes throughout the story.

___________________________________

This paired storyboard collection brings together two defining moments in the history of the One Ring—its discovery and its passing into legend.

The first sequence captures Gollum’s initial encounter with the Ring deep within the caverns of the Misty Mountains, where fascination turns to possession and the seeds of obsession take hold.

The second follows Bilbo’s recollection of that same world, where chance and cunning allow the Ring to slip from Gollum’s grasp and into a new destiny. With Bilbo and eventually to Frodo.

Together, these works form a rare narrative diptych—tracing the Ring’s journey from its first corrupted bearer to the moment it begins its path toward Middle-earth’s unfolding fate. Rich in atmosphere, character, and cinematic progression, this pairing offers collectors a complete origin story rendered through the raw, expressive language of Bakshi’s animation process.

💎 Collector’s Perspective

Unlike finished animation cels, storyboards are the closest surviving artifacts to the artist’s original vision—where composition, pacing, and emotion are first brought to life. This piece stands as both a cinematic blueprint and a work of art in its own right.

For the discerning collector of animation history, fantasy cinema, or Bakshi’s oeuvre, this storyboard represents a rare opportunity to acquire a cornerstone moment—where image, story, and myth converge.
