A striking image of five Ringwraiths together, capturing the moment Frodo crosses the boundary between Middle-earth and the terrifying World of Shadows.
The Lord of the Rings (1978)
Sequence G • Scene 30 • Cel #57
Original Cel Setup
A haunting original production cel depicting five Nazgûl as they appear within the Shadow World, revealed to Frodo after he places the One Ring upon his finger at Weathertop.
No longer merely the mysterious Black Riders pursuing the hobbits, the Ringwraiths emerge here as ancient, spectral servants of Sauron—their armored forms, glowing red eyes and eerie green-black coloring giving physical shape to the world hidden behind the Ring.
Bakshi’s stark treatment of the scene transforms the landscape along with them, creating one of the film’s most unsettling visual passages. Moments later, Frodo's encounter with the Nazgûl culminates in his stabbing by the chief Ringwraith with the Morgul blade.
