Adult Animation Comes to Cable Television

Long before adult animated television became mainstream, Ralph Bakshi returned to many of the ideas that had defined his early career.

Created for HBO, Spicy City presented an anthology of futuristic stories set within a technologically advanced metropolis filled with crime, corruption, desire, and mystery.

Each episode explored a different corner of this imagined future. Stories ranged from science fiction and noir to social satire and dystopian fantasy. Framing the series was Raven, a radio host who guided viewers through the city's darker corners.

The show arrived years before adult animation would become a dominant television format. While many animated series still targeted children or families, Spicy City openly embraced mature themes and cinematic storytelling.

The series demonstrated that animation could successfully serve adult audiences in a television environment—a concept that would become increasingly common in the decades that followed.
