Ralph Bakshi Meets Frank Frazetta

Fire and Ice united two of fantasy art's most distinctive visionaries: Ralph Bakshi and legendary painter Frank Frazetta.

Bakshi admired Frazetta's ability to create entire worlds within a single painting. Together they set out to bring that aesthetic to animation.

The film tells the story of a frozen kingdom threatened by the evil Ice Lord Nekron and the heroes who rise to oppose him. Yet the real star of the production is its visual design.

Using extensive rotoscoping and animation techniques, the filmmakers attempted to preserve the power, anatomy, and movement found in Frazetta's paintings.

Every frame reflects an era when fantasy was created by artists with pencils, paintbrushes, and imagination rather than computers.

Today the film remains a beloved cult classic and one of the most visually distinctive fantasy animations ever produced.
